Reserve Availability: CONF vs. CNF

There are a couple of codes that may appear on your schedule which, while different, seem to cause confusion due to their similarity in appearance. This week, we would like to clarify the differences in what these codes mean, when they appear on your schedule, and how they impact Reserve availability.

  • CONF: Conflict

The “Conflict” code is placed on the last day of the current bid month when you have a vacation that starts within the first 6 days of the new bid month. It serves as a placeholder for scheduling to prevent any carryover assignments that could conflict with the eventual vacation period. Once the vacation coding (VAC) is loaded for the new bid month as part of the finalized line awards, the CONF code is no longer necessary and should be removed from your schedule.

Q. Am I still available as a Reserve on a day with CONF?

A. Yes. This code is a one-minute placeholder (23:58-23:59) on the last day of the bid month. You are considered available for assignment for the rest of the calendar day. Once the code is removed, you will be available for legal carryover assignments.

  • CNF: Cannot Fly

The “Cannot Fly” code is used when a Reserve is unavailable for a sufficient number of days. This can occur in two (2) circumstances:

  • JCBA Section 7.AA.4.

When a PTO day causes a Reserve’s subsequent days of availability to be less than the shortest trip assigned to their base AND those days are followed by Set days off (IOFF) or vacation (VAC). This currently only applies to LHR based Flight Attendants.

  • JCBA Section 12.C.3.a.

When a “short block” of less than three (3) days of availability is created by a vacation period and the Reserve chooses to resolve the issue by dropping the days in the short block, unpaid.

Q. Am I still available as a Reserve on a day with CNF?
A. No. This code indicates that the Flight Attendant is off duty and unavailable for assignment.

Note: The CNF code cannot be removed in order to pick up trips.

Recognizing when and why these codes appear on your calendar and understanding how each may impact your availability ensures you will remain compliant with scheduling policies while maximizing the use of your time off. Always review your schedule in CCS carefully and plan accordingly.
