The start of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month dates back to October 1985, when the first organized movement to bring attention to the dangers of breast cancer took place in the United States. Since then, efforts to educate the public about this disease have continued to gain national attraction and multiply, including at our Union.
AFA created a special edition pink ribbon pin to wear for October to show our dedication as a Union to promote health and safety in our profession. Breast cancer stands as the most prevalent cancer among women on a global scale, even more so within our predominately female workgroup.
Its repercussions extend beyond the diagnosed individuals, reaching into our communities and affecting families, friends, and colleagues. Awareness and early detection are pivotal in the battle against this ailment.
As United Flight Attendants, here are ways we can actively support Breast Cancer Awareness Month:
- Education: Dedicate some time to familiarize yourself with breast cancer risk factors, symptoms, and prevention methods by accessing the National Cancer Institute's website.
- Wear your Pink AFA pin: Throughout the month of October, display your support by incorporating pink elements into your uniform, such as the pink ribbon AFA pin.
- Encourage Screening: Remind your loved ones and flying partners to schedule regular breast cancer screenings and mammograms. Timely detection can be lifesaving.
This October, let us stand together to instill change and contribute to the ongoing mission of spreading awareness about breast cancer.
