A message from President Dante Harris
Dear Council 12 Members:
California residents should be receiving their ballots for the Special Recall Election to be held September 14 in the near future if not already. Millionaire Republicans who want to roll back the clock on California’s worker protections are funneling big money into a campaign to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Let me be very clear. If the current Governor is recalled and replaced by one of the likely right- wing candidates, this is not good for flight attendants or for working families. You can expect an increase in attacks to Unions, efforts to suppress Voting Rights, and the scaling back of safety measures put in place to protect essential workers among other issues. If they are successful, we will lose years of progress in protecting workers and good jobs.
Who is behind this Recall? It is a national network of very wealthy anti-union funders who are taking aim at pensions, wages, health care and voting rights. They have spent millions to put this Special Recall Election on the ballot. Special elections traditionally have low union voter turn out so they have a better chance at winning than waiting for the scheduled election next year.
Governor Newsom supports Unions and working families. California’s laws to protect workers are some of the strongest in the nation. I am urging you all to join me in voting NO to question 1 on your ballot and mail it in as soon as possible or make sure to vote in person on September 14. This election will absolutely come down to voter turn out. Do not be complacent and sit this one out. The stakes are too high. Elections have consequences and we all must do our part to stand up for working families and fight back against this blatant attack on all of us and our jobs.
For those who have some extra time and would like to assist in this important fight, CWA will be hosting phone banks that you can do from the comfort of your home every Monday and Wednesday evening until September 14. Sign up at https://actionnetwork.org/forms/stop-the-recall-phonebanks.
In Solidarity,
Dante
