As 140 Jon Donaire Desserts production plant workers go into their fourth month on strike against Rich Products Corp, reporting low wages, unsafe work conditions, and forced overtime of up to 16 hours with no more than ten minutes notice before shift end. They labor in cold, wet conditions to produce 13 up to 38 cakes a minute. The workers create the base for the iconic ice cream cakes supplied to companies such as Baskin-Robbins and Cold Stone. The Los Angeles Labor Movement, joined by elected officials and community groups, keep holding actions and press conferences including outside local Baskin Robbins, calling on the company, and other customers, to support the striking workers and urge Jon Donaire to end the labor dispute.
Background
Since November 3rd, about 175 BCTGM Local 37 members have been on strike against Rich Products Corporation at the Jon Donaire Desserts production plant in Santa Fe Springs, CA
The workers are close to 100% Latino, many bilingual or mostly Spanish-speaking, a diverse mix of young and old, and the majority of the workers are women (approximately 75%)
They make ice cream cakes and other cake products.
Cake production line speeds continue to increase, as many as 38 cakes per minute moving down the line, causing hand and arm injuries plus workers falling out and quitting due to the physical and emotional stress.
Forced, mandatory overtime up to 16 hours with no more than ten minutes notice before shift end is common, causing added homelife stress particularly for single mothers and older workers.
These workers are asking for fair wages, safe working conditions, and above all, respect.
